Log Splitter Engines Recalled By American Honda Motor Co. Due to Fire Hazard

Manufacturer: American Honda Motor Corp., of Torrance, Calif.
Hazard: The engine’s fuel tank can crack and leak, posing a risk of fire or explosion.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: The recall involves Honda engines (model type GCV160LA N1A) used in Split Master by SpeeCo and Huskee brand log splitters. Only engine serial numbers between 5547012 and 6880908 are included in the recall. The serial number is located below the upper shroud near the oil dip-stick. The following models of log splitters are affected by the recall and are either silver/black or red/black colored.

Propane Storage Tanks Recalled By American Welding & Tank Due to Risk of Gas Leak; Can Pose Fire and Burn Hazard

Name of Product: Conversion Underground Propane Storage Tanks

Units: About 11,000

Manufacturer: American Welding & Tank LLC, of Jesup, Ga.

Hazard: An odorant is added to propane to help alert customers to propane leaks, but rust inside a propane tank can cause the odor to fade. Some converted above-ground to underground converted tanks can have an increased susceptibility to odor fade, causing consumers to be unable to detect the odor of propane in the event of a gas leak. This can pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers if there is a leak in the propane gas system.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received a report in which two individuals sustained first and second degree burn injuries, as they were attempting to ignite an outside fireplace.

Description: The recall includes 120 gallon to 1,000 gallon underground propane storage tanks which were previously converted from above-ground to underground storage tanks in the period of January 2005 through April 2008.

Sold to: Retail propane dealers in the eastern United States, from January 2005 through April 2008.

Remedy: Necessary repairs will be performed at the tank by the retail propane company. Known retail propane companies that sold the recalled tanks have been notified directly of the recall and will contact consumers directly.

Incidents/Injuries: American Honda has received one report of a shield breaking off the lawn mower. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves HRX walk-behind lawn mowers with model numbers HRX217(K)2HXA and HRX217(K)2HMA. The model and serial number are printed on a label located on the upper rear of the mower deck. Serial numbers included in the recall are MAGA-1500001 through 1520532. The recalled lawn mowers are red with “HONDA” written on the bag.

Hazard: The recalled glue guns can short circuit, causing the gun to smoke. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Dollar Tree is aware of four incidents in which these glue guns short circuited. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the “Crafters Square Hot Melt Mini Glue Gun” with product number “939701”. The gun dispenses hot glue and is intended for craft projects. The glue gun is black with an orange trigger and measures approximately 4 1/2 inches from the back of the gun to the tip. It has a 44-inch electrical cord attached. “Crafters Square” and “939701” are located on the guns’ packaging. “DS-010 Glue Gun” is written in raised letters on the handle of the gun.

Hazard: The legs on the bottom of the planter can detach when the planter is moved or becomes unbalanced. This could cause the planter to fall and injure bystanders.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 347 reports of the planters collapsing; 155 consumers have reported injuries including lacerations, broken toes and bruises. QVC has also received reports of property damage caused when the planter collapsed onto nearby items.

Description: The Topsy-Turvy Deluxe Tomato Planter with Stand (Item Numbers M16702 and M17499) is an upright planter used for growing tomatoes, peppers, or cucumbers. The planter consists of a 16” X 15” bag which holds up to 30 pounds of soil and is attached to the top of a 6-foot tall adjustable pole. Three legs are inserted into the pole to form a 36-inch wide base.

Sold through: QVC's televised shopping programs, its Web site, and in QVC’s Studio, employee and retail stores from March 2008 through April 2008 for about $30.

Remedy: Consumers who have already set up the planter should immediately take it down by having two adults carefully tip it over on its side. Consumers who purchased the planter through a QVC television program or QVC.com were mailed instructions on obtaining a refund. Consumers who have not received instructions should contact QVC. Consumers who purchased the planter at a QVC store should return the planter to any QVC store to receive a full refund.

Hazard: The internal heating element of the candle warmer can detach and melt the bottom of its plastic casing, which can in turn ignite or scorch the surface on which the candle warmer is placed, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Provo Craft has received 11 reports of incidents in which the heating elements detached, including two fires and nine incidents of property scorching. One consumer reported a blistered finger.

Product Description: This recall involves the Candlsense warmers with product codes ranging from YD0629 through YD0652 and YD0701 through YD0708. The candle warmers measure about 4 ¾ inches in diameter. The heating plate is black and the surrounding area is white plastic. “Provo Craft & Novelty Candle Warmer Air Freshener Model: WCY-8888” and the product code are embossed on the underside of the warmer.

Residential Super-large Gas Dryers Recalled By Miele Inc.

Miele Recalls Gas Dryers Due to Risk of Gas Leak or Fire

Name of Product: Residential Super-large Gas Dryers

Units: About 3,100

Importer: Miele Inc., of Princeton, N.J.

Hazard: If the dryer is improperly installed, the dryer’s internal gas fitting can loosen, posing a risk of gas leaking into the house. Any gas leak that is not detected can cause asphyxiation, a fire or an explosion. Also, one or both of the caps on the internal exhaust duct can become dislodged, which can cause lint to build up and be carried through the gas burner. This poses a risk of fire.

Incidents/Injuries: Miele has received 11 reports worldwide in which consumers reported smelling gas after installation of their dryers. The firm has also received a report of a fire causing property damage. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall involves Miele gas dryers, model T 9820. The dryers are residential super-large capacity units that are white-colored. The serial number can be located on the rim of the door opening, and is written as “Nr:xx/” followed by an 8-digit number in the range from 66461685 to 89921848.

Sold by: Miele distributors nationwide between March 2007 and December 2007 for about $1,300.

Manufactured in: Czech Republic

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled dryer immediately and turn off the gas supply to the unit. The firm has sent direct notices to consumers. Consumers who have not had their dryer inspected should contact a Miele authorized service provider for a free inspection and repair, if necessary. Dryers serviced since January 23, 2008 have been inspected/repaired.

Additional Incidents Prompt Re-Announcement of Recall of Gel Candles Due to Fire Hazard

(Note: This recall is an expansion of an earlier recall announced in February 2007.)

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of product: Gel Candles

Units: About 1,700

Manufacturer: M & A Global Technologies Inc., doing business as Spa at Home, of Tallahassee, Fla.

Hazard: The candles can have excessive flame height, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: M & A Global Technologies has received four additional reports of higher than normal flames and flames coming in contact with nearby combustibles resulting in minor fires, smoke and soot damage. The company has also received one additional report of burn injuries to a consumer’s hand.

Description: This recall involves Everlasting Jelly candles. Models include Champagne Glass with Heart, Model #502; Large Oval Bowl with Sand & Shells, Model #109-XL; Tumbler with Sand & Shells, Model #101-S; Round Shape with Curly Top and Red Roses, Model #506; Round Shape with Penguins, Model #604; Tumbler with Blue Roses & Leaves, Model #805-11; and Round Shape with Two Butterflies, Model #806-8. The candles were sold in clear glass containers of various sizes with a smaller glass of gel in the middle of the candle.

Sold at: Spa at Home stores and Spaathome.com nationwide from October 2003 through December2003 and October 2005 through December 2005 for between $9 and $50.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the candles and contact M & A Global Technologies for instructions on returning the product.

Char-Broil Recalls Two-Burner Gas Grills Sold Exclusively at Mills Fleet Farm Stores Due to Fire, Burn Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately until a replacement burner is installed.

Name of Product: Char-Broil Two-Burner Gas Grills Model 463720108

Units: About 400

Importer: Char-Broil LLC, of Columbus, Ga.

Manufacturer: Shenzhen Jinwoniu Trading Company LTD, China

Hazard: On the recalled grills, the main burner does not fit correctly and does not connect properly to the gas valve which could result in a propane leak. This poses fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves the Char-Broil gas grills with model number 463720108 and serial number ranging from 000001 to 000402. The gas grills have a main burner with two-burner plates, a 170 square inch swing-away rack, two side shelves and a condiment basket. Char-Broil’s logo is on the top of the lid of the grill. The serial and model numbers are located on the white rating label on the back of the horizontal support of the grill.

Sold at: Mills Fleet Farm Stores in Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin from February 2008 through April 2008 for about $120.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the grill immediately and contact Char-Broil for a free replacement burner and installation instructions.

American Flame Recalls Fireplaces to Replace Gas Valves Due to Fire and Explosion Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Fireplace Gas Valves

Units: About 12,000

Manufacturer: American Flame Inc., of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Hazard: Gas can continue to flow into the fireplace pilot light area after the switch has been turned “off,” posing a fire or explosion hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: American Flame has received two reports of incidents involving valve failure and continuous gas flow. No injuries or fires have been reported.

Description: The recall involves American Flame AF-4000 series fireplace gas valves installed in residential fireplaces made by twelve manufacturers under the following brand names: Pacific Energy, Travis Industries, CFM Corporation, Canadian Heating Products, Portland Willamette, Rasmussen, Chimeneas de Columbia, Twin Eagles, FDM, Inca Metals (Savannah Heating), Even Temp, and Valley Comfort. The valves were installed in some but not all fireplaces. Date codes included in the recall include 0622 through 0718. The gas valve model number is located on a label on the bottom of each gas valve. The date code is located above the label.

Sold by: Fireplace retailers and distributors nationwide from September 2006 through July 2007 for between $500 and $2,000 for the fireplaces, with additional costs for installation.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fireplaces and contact their dealer for a free repair. The repair involves replacing the fireplace’s valve if it leaks gas in the “off” position when tested by a qualified service technician.

The Home Depot Recalls Candle Holders Due to Fire Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Candle Holders

Units: About 14,000

Importer: The Home Depot, of Atlanta, Ga.

Hazard: Sunlight passing through the glass portion can cause nearby flammable materials to ignite, posing a fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received one report of a fire. No injuries or property damage have been reported.

Description: The sun-shaped candle holder is glass and metal, and was sold in four colors (red, green, blue, and yellow). “15.75" Candle Holder” is printed on the product’s hang tag.

Sold at: The Home Depot stores in the southern and western regions of the U.S. from January 2008 through March 2008 for about $10.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products and return them to The Home Depot for a full refund.

Frigidaire Canada Recalls Kenmore Wall Ovens Due to Fire and Burn Hazards

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Kenmore Wall Ovens

Units: About 7,500

Manufacturer: Frigidaire Canada, a sister company of Electrolux Home Products Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio

Hazard: During extended broiling, gas can build in the oven cavity and escape when the oven door is opened. This poses a burn and possible fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Electrolux has received 16 reports of incidents involving gas build-up, including flames escaping from the oven door, burns to the hands and face and singed hair.

Description: This recall involves Kenmore 24-inch-wide gas and propane, wall-mounted ovens. The self-cleaning ovens were sold in white, black, bisque and stainless steel, and have the Kenmore name printed on the oven control panel. The model and serial numbers of the ovens that are part of this recall can be found on the frame on the left side of the oven cavity.

HSN Recalls Power Strips for Charge-It-All Valets Due to Fire and Shock Hazards

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Charge-It-All Valets

Units: About 17,000

Retailer: HSN LP, of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Distributor: Ingenious Designs LLC, of Englewood, New York

Hazard: The power strip located inside the valet has undersized wires, which can pose fire and shock hazards to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported

Description: This recall involves the power strips sold with the medium and large Joy Mangano Charge-It-All Valets. The valet is a box with divided compartments that comes with a power strip that allows the user to recharge and organize items such as cell phones, mp3 players, PDAs and cameras in a single location. The medium valet comes with a 3-receptacle power strip and the large valet comes with a 6-receptacle power strip. The letters J and M are printed in cursive under the valet.

Sold by: HSN LP, exclusively, from October 2007 through January 2008 for about $50 for the large valet and $40 for the medium valet.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the power strip. HSN LP will provide a replacement power strip and an in-store refund of $5. HSN LP will pay for all shipping charges to return the product. HSN is directly contacting consumers with the recalled units.
