JD Fine & Company Recalls Children's Hooded Sweatshirts with Drawstrings Due to Strangulation Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Children's Hooded Velour Sweatshirts with Drawstrings
Units: About 1,700
Importer: JD Fine & Company, of Concord, Calif.
Hazard: The hooded sweatshirts have a drawstring at the neck which can pose a strangulation hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) (which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets and sweatshirts.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: This recall involves hooded sweatshirts sold under the "Sweet Tart" brand name in three styles: G80072873C in navy with rhinestones in the shape of a star; G80072874M in pink with rhinestones in the shape of a peace sign; and G80072875F in gray with rhinestones in the shape of a heart. The sweatshirts were sold in children's sizes XS, S, M and L and the name "Sweet Tart" can be found on the neck label.
Sold at: Saks Off 5th Avenue outlet stores from July 2009 to April 2010.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately remove the drawstrings from the jackets to eliminate the hazard or return the product to the store where purchased for a refund.

Nine Firms Agree To Pay More Than $350,000 in Civil Penalties For Failing To Timely Report Drawstrings In Children’s Outerwear

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that nine firms have agreed to pay a total of $355,000 in civil penalties. The penalties settle allegations that the firms knowingly failed to report to the CPSC immediately, as required by federal law, that their children’s hooded sweatshirts, jackets, or sweaters were sold with drawstrings at the hood and neck. These products, which the firms eventually recalled, pose a strangulation hazard that can cause death to children.

Bicycle Pedals Recalled by Look Cycle; Pedals Can Break Causing Cyclists to Fall

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Look Cycle USA, of San Jose, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 80,000 (40,000 pairs) KéO Bicycle Pedals. The steel axle inside the pedal can break, posing a fall hazard to cyclists.

Halogen Work Lights Recalled by Harbor Freight Tools Due to Fire and Shock Hazards

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Harbor Freight Tools, of Camarillo, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 58,000 Chicago Electric Halogen Work Lights. The halogen work lights can overheat and melt, and pose a risk of fire and electrical shock to consumers.

DEWALT Recalls Cordless Brad Nailers Due to Injury Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), DEWALT Industrial Tool Co., of Towson, Md., is voluntarily recalling about 14,000 DEWALT DC608 Cordless Brad Nailers. The nailer can operate when the lock-off (safety) is in the locked position. Also, the nailer can operate when the trigger is not pulled and the contact trip is depressed. The unexpected ejection of a nail poses a serious injury hazard to consumers.

Baby Appleseed Recalls Cribs Due to Fall Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Baby Appleseed, of City of Industry, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 500 Davenport Cribs. The cribs fail to meet the federal safety standards for cribs. The cribs have a two mattress support system. The secondary mattress support, used for the lowest position, does not meet the full 26 inch minimum height in its lowest position, allowing children inside to crawl over the railing, posing a fall hazard.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboards Recalls Cribs Due to Fall Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Mother Hubbard’s Cupboards, of Toronto, Canada, is voluntarily recalling about 1,300 cribs. The cribs fail to meet the federal safety standards. The distance between the mattress support bracket in the lowest position and the top of the side rail in the highest position is less than the required 26 inches, posing a fall hazard to children who climb over the railing.

Hazard: The garments have a drawstring through the hood, posing a strangulation hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recalled jackets and hoodies have a drawstring through the hood. They were sold in children’s sizes 2 through 12. The jackets were sold in the following colors: tan, stone, bayou blue, crisp blue, white, berry, and citrus. The hoodies were sold in teal, kiwi, mandarin, aloe green, paprika, hibiscus, smokey blue, white, sherbet, cobalt, and stone.

Sold at: Coolibar’s catalog and www.coolibar.com from March 2005 through April 2008 (hoodies) and from February 2008 through April 2008 (jackets) for between $25 and $40.

Hazard: The flower embellishments on the sandals can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Description: The recalled girl’s sandals are leather with attached leather flowers and were sold under the “Cadence-Lea” and “Trio-Lea” names. “Cadence-Lea” sandals are white, light green or silver. “Trio-Lea” sandals are white or silver. They were sold in girls’ sizes 5 through 12. Nordstrom is printed on the sandals.

Sold exclusively at: Nordstrom stores nationwide from March 2008 through May 2008 for about $30.

Sold at: College bookstores, fan stores, children’s boutiques, and gift shops nationwide from March 2007 through February 2008. The Gingham Shortall sold for about $35 and the Flannel Shortall sold for about $24.

Hazard: The blanket’s satin edge can come loose, posing a strangulation hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has 18 reports of the satin separating from the blanket. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled children’s blankets are 14 inches square with an animal head sewn in the middle. The satin border around the outside edge is about one inch wide. The blankets were sold in the following styles:
