KDDI Corp Recalls 214000 Kyocera Phones

TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Japan's second largest cellular operator KDDI Corp said it would recall some 214,000 mobile phones that may overheat and blow up, after several people were injured.

KDDI, known for its 'au' brand, will replace battery packs of its W42K model, marketed only in Japan, a company spokesman said.

The firm received 13 complaints from users of the cell phone made by Kyocera Corp about the trouble. Three of them suffered slight burns, the spokesman said.

The problem lies in the battery packs, which may short-circuit, generate smoke and blow up if their surface is damaged, he said.

USDA Might Omit Retailer Information In Meat Recalls (Why?)

A proposal is being considered by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to omit retailer information when tainted meat is recalled. The exception to this would be in the case of serious health risks. The USDA has been under a great deal of pressure from the food industry to adopt such a policy.

Last month, the USDA announced that the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company was recalling 143 million pounds—65 million kilos—of meat, following a videotape of plant workers forcing unfit cattle into slaughter. Most of the meat was likely consumed; at least 37 million pounds were used for school lunches and federal nutrition programs, according to the USDA. Now, people are wondering if anyone fell ill from the recall and if E. coli was involved. Had the proposal been in place last month, the public not have known if their stores sold meat from the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company.

Chris Connelly, Agriculture Department spokesman, confirmed that the USDA is looking into whether or not to make disclosing store names be required for “Class I” recalls. This class of recall poses greatest health hazard, whereas “Class II” pose minimal risk to human health. Today, the government discloses only that a recall occurs and does not indicate those retailers that might have received recalled meat or vegetables.

Consumer groups and Democratic lawmakers argue that the public should be provided with the retailers’ names in every meat recall. The rule, in its original context was meant to have been applicable to all meat recalls. “It’s unacceptable to us because of the way the rule was originally fashioned and we have an immediate example of the Hallmark case being exempted,” said Tony Corbo of Food & Water Watch, a Washington, D.C., advocacy group. Agriculture Secretary Edward Schafer said there are “differences with the different classes of recalls. But, you know, a Class I recall, to have a retailer notification, I think, is important.”

China Bans Imports Of Italian Mozzarella Cheese.

March 30 (Bloomberg) -- China ordered a ban on imports of Italian mozzarella cheese after Italy recalled the buffalo milk used to make the cheese on concerns it may be tainted with dioxin.

``All entry and exit ports should not handle quarantine applications for the Italian-made mozzarella,'' the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement on its Web site.

Italy announced on March 28 a recall of cheese from 25 buffalo herds after tests revealed levels of dioxin, a carcinogenic and disease-causing byproduct of herbicides, which exceeded the legal European Union limit.

The Chinese administration asked importers to stop sales of the cheese and recall products that had been sold, the statement said. All kinds of cheese products from Italy must go through laboratory tests before they are allowed to enter the country, the administration said.

France halted mozzarella sales on Friday, and later lifted the ban after Italian authorities satisfied the European Union by recalling the products, according to a statement by Agriculture Minister Michel Barnier.

Koch Foods, a Fairfield, Ohio, Recalls Frozen Chicken Products Due To Mislabeling

Recall Release CLASS I RECALL
FSIS-RC-011-2008 HEALTH RISK: HIGH

Congressional and Public Affairs
(202) 720-9113
Laura Reiser

WASHINGTON, March 29, 2008 - Koch Foods, a Fairfield, Ohio, establishment, is recalling approximately 1,420 pounds of frozen chicken breast products because they were packaged with the incorrect label. The frozen, pre-browned, raw products were labeled as "precooked" and therefore do not provide proper preparation instructions. These raw products may appear fully cooked.

The following product is subject to recall:
  • 10-pound cases of "Koch Foods Fully Cooked Breaded Chicken Breast Fillet with Rib Meat" containing two 5-pound bags. Each case bears the establishment number "P-20795" inside the USDA mark of inspection, a production code of "24837-2", a date code of "B03982" and as well as a product code of "86861" printed on the label.

The frozen chicken products were produced on Feb. 8, 2008, and were shipped to distribution centers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, intended for use by food service institutions.
The problem was discovered by the company. FSIS has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a physician.

Media with questions about the recall should contact company Chief Financial Officer Mark Kaminsky at (847) 384-5940. Consumers with questions about the recall should contact company Vice President of Sales John Marler at (601) 732-3056.

FSIS is reminding consumers that all poultry products should be cooked to a safe minimum internal temperature of 165° Fahrenheit as determined by a food thermometer. Using a food thermometer is the only way to know that food has reached a high enough temperature to destroy foodborne bacteria.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.

Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.
